At Renovated Minds we want to help clients heal from wounds, build awareness of unhealthy thinking, and live a life filled with hope, joy, and freedom. Often in therapy clients will learn about themselves and still struggle with relationships. Sessions are also offered for a spouse/friend/family member to join a session to practice communication and conflict resolution.

MINDFULNESS BASED INTERVENTIONS

Mindfulness helps to press the “pause button” on life to help oneself calm and become aware of thoughts and emotions. Practicing regularly can help increase self-awareness of surrounding stressors as well as increase focus and concentration. A goal of mindfulness is to help be fully present in the moment without emotional reactivity to the chaos around us.

HOW TO START //

Practicing mindfulness involves shifting your awareness from “thinking” to noticing the present at any time. It may be while you are walking your dog in the morning and you breathe in the fresh air and listen to the birds singing. It could also be during a meal when you take a moment to pause and savor the smell and taste of your food and drink. Other ways to practice mindfulness can include meditations such as mindful breathing, body scan awareness, loving-kindness mediation, and mindful listening.

Within the field of mental health, practicing mindfulness has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, fear, and panic while improving concentration, self-compassion, and life-satisfaction. Within the realm of physical health, mindfulness has been shown to reduce measures of stress, pain, blood pressure, while improving sleep and memory. These benefits have even been tracked by imaging on the brain showing improvements in areas of cognition and memory, and less activation in areas related to stress and anxiety. Additional studies have shown that mindfulness can help fight addiction, increase job satisfaction, empathy, compassion, forgiveness, and strengthen relationships.

THERAPY ENHANCEMENT (EMDR)

Renovated Minds is passionate about providing quality mental health care, which is why we prioritize being trained and specialized in evidence-based practices. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a proven therapeutic method used when processing trauma.

TRAUMATIC STRESS //

Can have lasting negative effects on our well-being. Using treatment modalities specifically developed for treating trauma, we work on reducing symptoms of traumatic stress, improve coping, and increase resiliency. As conventional talk therapy becomes mainstream, we are learning about its limitations for creating change that sticks. The nervous system can get flooded and the energy of reactivity and impulse hijacks the best intentions. You may have learned new skills and gained understanding of yourself, but the deep hold of trauma in the body within the nervous system gets in the way of having the clear thinking required to use the new skills. EMDR approaches go deep to the root of what is causing reactivity, impulsivity, and urges.

EMDR //

Protocols allow trauma in the body to be released without repetitive talking and reliving of the trauma.

These neural-based techniques can reduce the client’s need for pharmacological treatments. These treatments are appropriate for Mood Disorders such as Anxiety and Depression, OCD, Eating Disorders, PTSD as well as physiological issues such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions.

INTERACTIVE //

EMDR is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress differently from common talk therapy. Most likely candidates are adolescents or adults who experience depression, anxiety, PTSD, have been abused, or are recently sober from an addiction recovery program. It can also be effective to increase belief in self and increase relaxation in the body. Focusing on your strengths, positive memories, and internal resources can enhance the good already in your life. Learn more about EMDR therapy at EMDRIA.org

POSTPARTUM SUPPORT

Women experience many emotional changes during pregnancy and postpartum, and sometimes struggle with guilt for not being the mom they “think they should be.” Life changes so much after welcoming a child into the world and it can be difficult to adjust to the “new normal.” (Not to mention sleep deprived!) Many women will experience postpartum depression following the birth of a child and some will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy. Men can have postpartum depression, too! There is help for you. Please reach out and get help during this often confusing and vulnerable time.
